You get to the gym and you head straight for your first exercise! No warm- up or anything. We are all rushed and sometimes the anxiety to get the workout completed is overwhelming. STOP!!

Before you begin your next exercise session please perform an active warm- up. Your body will perform much better and you will reduce your chance of injury. 5mins is all you need, but 10min is better!

Let me be specific here.. I’m talking about pre-workout Stretching only!

Static stretching will actually desensitize a muscle and cause it to relax, not something you want to do prior to a training session (unless you muscular imbalances, but that’s another story).

Pre-workout Muscles need to be excited and a great way to do this is to perform dynamic stretches. Basically, you take a muscle through its range of motion for several reps only holding the “stretch” for a 1-2secs.

So, why not turn your flat grade (boring) treadmill workout into a glute burning, hamstring sizzling hill climb. Put some intensity under those legs! You can walk it or run it butt (get it), do it with an incline (2.0<).

The next time you lace up to go for a “relaxed” run do some INTERVALS instead. Basically, intervals is where you sprint for 1min and walk for 1min for a prescribed amount of time. This is a more productive activity for boosting the metabolism. This style of running will be anything but relaxed. Give it a try!
